“The main outcome of the project are immediately created improvisational sound collages that may be perceived as compositions capturing the complex ambience of the place. The recordings of common improvisations in the church using the recordings of the sounds from the Žíp village surroundings. The recordings capture the result of a few-day stay in the place as well as the atmosphere under the roof of the church - with a minimum postproduction including flaws and imperfections arisen during the process of recording. Since the collages are improvisations, they are very spontaneous, and yet on the other hand, they are also a result of comprehensive thinking and possibly a choice taken. Our approach often requires to work with certain reflexivity: sometimes we acknowledge our presence during the recording process, sometimes we treat a flaw as a motive or an intervention. As opposed to many professionals in the field recordings, we are not formal purists and we do not strive for a perfectly pure sound recording at all costs. As it was our first time in the area, we could not quite predict what sounds would be encountered here. Surely crickets were sonically dominant, for the church is surrounded by uncut meadows from several sides. The collages also manifest a unique position of the Žíp church and the related sound characteristics of the field. Thanks to the church erected on the hill overlooking the village, it feels as some sound watchtower. Both sounds of the immediate area and the village below and those from the ‘horizon’ kilometres away reach the church. And mixing of these two ‘worlds’ is strongly manifested in the recordings.”

Moving Spaces is a site-specific project by the AVA collective, composed of Martin Bukáček (Snediggen Snurssla), Matěj Kotouček (Sky to Speak, Sun Drugs), Andrej Nechaj (Tatratank), and Marek Salamon (Spectral Index). Their collaboration usually results in sonic interventions on the borders of performance and installation, created on the spot with regard to the architectural, social, or geographic context. Usually, these are improvisations with field recordings, which come from an archive shared by all four members of the project. In Moving Spaces, individual approaches naturally merge to result in a single mutating shape. Every resultant situation is preceded by careful listening, sound collecting (extending the archive), recording selection, and the final four-channel improvisation. This spatial collage stimulates listeners to move in the space between the speakers, thus becoming active components of the improvisation. Moving Spaces are gradually expanding their activities to include authorial compositions. One of these is STEP (Radiocustica, 2017), which reconstructs movement across a sonic landscape, taking walking as its central theme. We can also hear similar approaches in the output from their residency in Žíp. AVA is also a promoters’ group, bringing new names on the international experimental scene to interesting spaces in Brno.

Záznamy zachycují výsledek několikadenního pobytu v místě a atmosféru pod střechou kostela s minimální post-produkcí včetně chyb a nedokonalostí vzniklých při nahrávacím procesu.

Každej výslednej situácii predchádza pozorné počúvanie, zber zvukov – dopĺňanie archívu, následný výber a výsledná 4-kanálová improvizácia.
