“My choice for UŠAMI project was a church in Rybník village. The architecture of the whole place made a strong first impression on me. The church from the 14th century on the hill overlooking the opposite hills and the cemetery behind a stone wall. The place was sonically very live from the very first moment. What was heard were mostly crickets around the church. Capturing them was, however, not an easy task, because when I approached them, they all fell quiet. So I came up with a different tactic: I was recording only inside the church where the sound seeped into. The sound was amplified by the acoustics around the altar and the church walls filtered the sounds of the surroundings in the way I could hear only their pure tones and rhythm. At this point, I was definitely building up on my experience of playing with cicadas and the collaboration with David Rothenberg, a specialist in animal sound as music. I plugged an old harmonium in the church, although I was able to get just a few tones going. The keys were stuck, pedals torn. First I was pulling the strings at the pedals, as if milking a cow, making a rhythm with the chords of the stuck keys. Then I managed to plug one pedal and play with a foot. Some registers were completely functional, so I could change the colour of harmonies and octave position. I added voice to it all. After several compositions, the church felt much friendlier, as if it came live and was more ours.”

Lucie Vítková is a composer, improviser and performer who is currently a scholar at the New York University, US. Right from the start her work showed an interest in social and political aspect of improvisation, with an emphasis on a community characterized by the variability of approaches and interests. She develops and reevaluates her composition techniques which she uses to change relationships between players and to reform established hierarchies in music. In here sound experiments, she makes use of graphic scores, dance and movement, knowledge of Czech folklore and traditional Gagaku music, field recordings, overlaps into fashion design (sound costumes) and a number of non-musical objects (cans, water, vacuum cleaner, papers). She plays accordion, hichiriki, harmonica, synthesizer and often here own voice as well. She studied at Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, Royal Conservatory in the Hague, California Institute of the Arts and at the Columbia University in NY. She collaborates with TAK Ensemble, Kamraton, S.E.M. Ensemble, String Noise, Argento Ensemble, Ghost Ensemble and Wet Ink.

Klávesy byly zaseknuté a pedály utržené.

Študovala na Janáčkovej akadémii v Brne, Royal Conservatory v Haagu, California Institute of the Arts a na Columbia University v NY. Spolupracuje s TAK Ensemble, Kamraton, S.E.M. Ensemble, String Noise, Argento Ensemble, Ghost Ensemble a Wet Ink.
